Founded in 1869, Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) is the pediatric teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School and is one of the largest free-standing academic pediatric medical centers in the U.S., with 404 beds, 22,600 inpatient admissions, 22,400 surgeries, and 472,000 outpatient and emergency visits per year. BCH serves a diverse population of newborns, infants, children and adolescents. BCH and its satellite locations provide care for the population of Massachusetts as well as national and international referrals. It has nearly 1,000 active medical and dental staff and 775 residents and fellows. Currently, 1,300 research faculty (with $308 million in annual funding) conduct biomedical research in 36 departments. BCH has leading programs in biomedical informatics and health services research, as well as extensive research programs in every pediatric specialty.
