The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors weighs in on data sharing

The ICMJE is recommending in a recent report sharing of deidentified patient data that supports clinical trial results within 6 months of publication. This will be in addition to publication of study protocols and prospective registration of trials. There are some hidden costs associated with data sharing, and others are arguing that although data sharing has merit, open access to trial reports and protocols is an important first step.
