Why Is ClinicalTrials.gov Still Struggling?

The registration of clinical trials in ClinicalTrials.gov was mandated in 2005 in an attempt to maximize transparency and accountability in the conduct of research, but researcher compliance with the conditions of registration has been found to be as low as 13% in recent years (NEJM 2015).  Several problems and controversies can result from non-compliance, not the least of which include the ability to manipulate research hypotheses to match post-hoc findings and risks to patients participating in unregistered trials.  Researchers cite the website’s error-prone interface, laborious submission processes, and a lack of real incentives to register among their top barriers to compliance.  Read more.
