Katie Chiotos is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She completed a combined pediatric infectious diseases and critical care medicine fellowship, as well as a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology in 2017. Dr. Chiotos serves as Medical Director of the CHOP Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, and in this capacity, has spearheaded numerous quality improvement projects focused on improving antibiotic and diagnostic test use throughout the institution. 

Dr. Chiotos' PEDSnet Scholars project focuses on studying the impact of a diagnostic test stewardship intervention aimed at reducing collection of tracheal aspirate cultures in mechanically ventilated children, and measuring the impact of the intervention on broad-spectrum antibiotic use. The specific aims of her project are to:

1. Develop a clinical protocol for the appropriate use of tracheal aspirate cultures;
2. Iteratively develop and evaluate implementation strategies for the tracheal aspirate culture clinical protocol developed in Specific Aim 1;
3. Measure the impact of implementation of the tracheal aspirate culture clinical protocol developed in Specific Aim 1 on tracheal aspirate culture use; and
4. Measure the impact of implementation of the tracheal aspirate culture clinical protocol developed in Specific Aim 1 on broad-spectrum antibiotic use.
