In most cases, each variable definition consists of a code set applied to a specific type of clinical data, referred to here as the Clinical Type. For these variables, the presence of a code from the code set serves as evidence of the variable of interest within a study. In some instances, more complex logic, such as inclusion and exclusion criteria for a cohort, is required to identify relevant patients or events. For each variable, the date its definition was submitted to the PEDSnet Coordinating Center is shown, along with the type of clinical information it addresses. Additionally, terms from the National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) vocabulary are provided to convey the broader context in which the variable was used in a PEDSnet study. These headings are intended to offer background on the study requirements involved in developing the variable definition, rather than to describe every possible use. Selecting a variable’s name will open the variable record in PEDSpace where you can download the referenced code sets and find additional details about the associated logic and the PEDSnet studies that utilized the variable. You can also browse variables in the <a href="https://pedsnet.org/metadata/handle/20.500.14642/677" >Variable Definition</a> and <a href="https://pedsnet.org/metadata/handle/20.500.14642/1" >Concept Set</a> collection in PEDSpace.
The PEDSnet Variable Dictionary provides standardized definitions used to identify analytic study constructs in data harmonized from electronic health records.
