Abstract

The results of a Clinical Events and Specialty Agreement check using the Multi-Site, Exploratory, Cross-Sectional parameters. This check investigates the distribution of specialty utilization for visits where Type II Diabetes was diagnosed.

Funder(s)

Provenance

This data quality check was run on a data extracted from the PAQS Query 3 Project. These results were not used for the query, but rather run on the query data after analysis was conducted as part of an SSQDA demonstration project.

Description

  • Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Other appear to be the specialties with the most heterogeneity. Pediatrics also has a visible spread, but this is likely due to pediatric institutions in the C7 network demonstrating higher utilization in this category.
  • Institutions that stand out from the pack in particular specialties, like C7TCH in OBGYN or C11BMC in Podiatry, could indicate that these institutions have specialty clinics focused in these areas that support these areas of care.
  • C7CCHMC stands out as somewhat unusual, with high utilization in Heme-Onc and Pulmonology specialties. This could indicate a potential mismapping, or that diabetes care is given in a care setting that has been identified in the data as a different type of specialty clinic.

Response to Findings

Study team did not conduct further investigation or data intervention in response to these results because this was a demonstration project.

This check computes types of clinical events that occur across clinician or facility specialties. It summarizes the quality of clinical specialty data in a study sample to examine multiple sites. The intention of the check is to evaluate the concordance of specific events (e.g., diagnosis of type I diabetes) and specialist providers or care sites (e.g., endocrinologist or endocrinology clinic) at the visit level.
