This study will validate a computable phenotype to identify children with pulmonary embolism (PE), with a particular focus on PE in cardiac populations. Hilary Whitworth and the CENTIPEDE Study Team will validate outcomes, interventions, and risk stratification in a multicenter database (PEDSnet). Multicenter data is necessary for powerful research to identify safe and effective therapies in pediatric PE. First, they must accurately identify the affected populations, interventions, and outcomes in these data sets. They will assess a computable phenotype, previously validated at CHOP, at two other centers (CCHMC and Nationwide) and risk stratify patients in PEDSnet with currently utilized risk stratification algorithms for pediatric PE. Next, they will determine how to improve this phenotype for cardiac populations, who often have different physiology, diagnosis, and management than typical thromboembolic PE. Then they will develop a validated algorithm to identify PE interventions and outcomes. This work will revolutionize multi-center research in pediatric PE and allow for future research to determine safe and effective management
