The “Extreme Weather and Pediatric Health Outcomes” study investigates the impact of climate change-related extreme weather events, such as extreme heat and heavy rainfall, on children’s health across the United States. This innovative research aims to address critical knowledge gaps by examining both short-term and long-term health outcomes in pediatric populations affected by extreme weather.
Using electronic health records (EHR) from over 13 million children across 11 U.S. regions in the PEDSnet network, the study will link individual health data with detailed meteorological and neighborhood-level characteristics. The study has three primary aims:
Acute health impacts: To assess how recent extreme weather events are associated with acute pediatric health outcomes, including asthma exacerbations, dehydration, and gastroenteritis, using advanced modeling techniques.
Chronic health impacts: To investigate how cumulative exposure to extreme weather contributes to the development of chronic conditions such as mental health disorders, asthma, obesity, and allergic rhinitis over time.
Neighborhood vulnerability and health equity: To analyze disparities in health outcomes based on neighborhood infrastructure (e.g., tree canopy, housing age) and social factors, and to explore how these factors contribute to differences in vulnerability to extreme weather events among children.
